5 Tips to Avoid Wire Transfer Fraud
Wire transfers are a fast and convenient way to send money from your account to pay an invoice. However, because wire transfers are irreversible, they can also be the target of fraud schemes. Check out these few tips to keep your money secure.
1. Remember, wire transfers are like sending cash.
Once sent, wire transfers cannot be reversed. If you make a mistake or are scammed, you may not be able to get your money back.
2. Know the scam warning signs.
Warning #1: Unexpected wire transfer requests.
ALWAYS be cautious if you receive requests to wire funds when you're not expecting an invoice.
Warning #2: Last minute changes to instructions.
Especially if you've sent money to the source before and the account information has changed since then.
3. Ask yourself a few questions before sending:
Q1. Did you verbally call and verify the wire instructions with a known phone number (not from the email request)?
Q2. Do you owe this person/company for a service or goods?
Q3. Did you get wire instructions from their bank?
4. Don't be rushed.
Scammers often change legitimate instructions to trick you into making a wire transfer. They may even manipulate the caller ID so their phone calls appear to be coming from a legitimate source. ALWAYS verify the authenticity of requests before taking any action. If you've been asked to act immediately, slow down and take time to think the process through. You can always hang up and re-dial, using a number you're sure is authentic. Taking the time you need to verify can make all the difference.
5. When in doubt, stop and get help.
Listen to your gut! If at any point, you find yourself unsure or suspicious, please give us a call to talk through the validity of the request. If you believe you've fallen victim to a wire transfer scam, contact us immediately.
